Reading from the Book of Wisdom (13,1-9): By nature, all men who were ignorant of God were vain, and they were unable to know the One who is, starting from the good things that are visible, and they did not recognize the Craftsman by observing his works, but they considered as gods fire, wind, light air, the starry orbits, rushing water, and the heavenly luminaries, rulers of the world. If, fascinated by their beauty, they thought them gods, let them know how much their Lord surpasses them, for the author of beauty created them; and if their power and activity amazed them, let them calculate how much more powerful is the One who made them; for through the greatness and beauty of creatures, the One who gave them being is discovered by analogy. Even so, little can be blamed on them, for perhaps they go astray, seeking God and wanting to find him; indeed, they turn over his works, they explore them, and their appearance captivates them, because what they see is beautiful. But not even these are excusable, because, if they managed to know so much that they were able to discover the beginning of the cosmos, how did they not find their Lord sooner? The word of the Lord Psalm Ps 19,2-3.4-5 R/. The heavens proclaim the glory of God The heavens proclaim the glory of God, the firmament announces the work of his hands; day unto day conveys the message, night unto night whispers it. R/. Without speaking, without pronouncing, without their voice being heard, their proclamation reaches the whole earth and their language, to the ends of the world. R/. Gospel of the Day Reading from the holy Gospel according to Saint Luke (17,26-37): At that time, Jesus said to his disciples: “As it happened in the days of Noah, so it will also be in the days of the Son of Man: they ate, drank, and married, until the day Noah entered the ark; then the flood came and destroyed them all. The same happened in the days of Lot: they ate, drank, bought, sold, planted, built; but on the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained from the sky and destroyed them all. So it will be on the day the Son of Man is revealed. On that day, if someone is on the rooftop and has his belongings in the house, he must not go down to get them; if someone is in the field, he must not turn back. Remember the wife of Lot. Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it; and whoever loses it will keep it. I tell you this: that night, two will be in one bed; one will be taken and the other left; two women will be grinding together; one will be taken and the other left.” They asked him: “Where, Lord?” He answered: “Where the vultures gather, there is the body.” The Gospel of the Lord
