Uniformed Russians with Kalashnikov assault rifles patrolled the site on Wednesday, but officials would not comment on the mission. Earlier this week, about 500 Russian troops, diplomats, security personnel and aid workers arrived in Kabul. They were reportedly well received by local people. The Northern Alliance Foreign Minister, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, said on Tuesday (November 27) that the Russian mission was about to open in Kabul. He said it would be a new embassy because the old one had been destroyed. The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) also distributed food aid in Kabul on Wednesday. Aid was unloaded from trucks and given to Afghan men and women. The UNHCR is hoping the aid will help avert a looming refugee crisis this winter.
