Travis Orbin - ItsTeeth - "TDB" & "CKW," Project Explanation

http://itsteeth-orbin.bandcamp.com/   / itsteeth   This is part one of a short series documenting my drum tracking sessions for 'Divided', a side project that I did with my friend Jacob Belcher. Please view the entire video for a complete description of how this all came together. As stated, this is a side project--not a session--so if you dig the music, please consider purchasing either a download or a limited edition CD from our Bandcamp. Thanks so much! It was a ton of fun collaborating with Jacob on 'Divided'. In regards to the drums, aside from the kit and some percussion bits (none in these two tunes), I also played around with some production tricks, automating room mics for certain sections, adding reverb, and suggesting various effects to Jacob to try out. At the beginning of "CKW", for instance, after the barrage of drums I boosted the room mics to blast loudly and cut out strips of the audio in time to the pulse of the tune (135 BPM). I'm only now flirting with this kind of stuff so hopefully my ideas will improve, hah. The beginning of "CKW" starts with some fast-paced improvisation; I tracked this the same night as "TDB", feeling particularly inspired after knocking it out. I simply restarted the click and let it fly. This is why the lighting is a little different after the video fade-out. I figured we could use it as a drum intro and that's exactly what we ended up doing! The second half of "CKW" contains a sort of 'drum feature'. I'm playing some drum 'n' bass-esque stuff (using that term lightly, as the tempo isn't fast) and some weird syncopations, over-the-bar phrasings and such which give way to more and more intense playing in order to explode into the section starting at 7:48. I switched out my right-side hats and crashes to give the second half of the song a different vibe; the 12" hats punctate the DnB leanings I was hearing. For all gear inquiries, please visit: http://www.travisorbin.com/equipment.htm. On "TDB" I used my Reference Brass snare and on "CKW" (after the improv) it's the 4"x14" maple piccolo. Notes: "TDB" 1:53 - 8th-note quintuplet 1:54 - 2:00 - crashes complement piano melody 3:27 - 4:08 - ghost notes (only) are all improvised "CKW" 4:33 - muted one-handed press roll followed by a left-side hi-hat splash, right-side hi-hat chick and a snare crescendo 6:50 - 16th triplet fill-in is delayed by a regular 16th-note Full drum set transcriptions: http://www.travisorbin.com/images/Its...
