Hi everyone~ Happy new year! I wanted to start this year with a topic dear to my heart: the rough transition from dental school & residency to real life world dentistry. I've heard many different stories from my mentors, upperclassmen, even my peers.. and everyone's experience will vary. On social media, and even panelists from school events will be more of positive ones, because we usually share/post the best parts of our lives on these platforms. We are often too ashamed and embarrassed to talk about the unglamorous parts of our career. Some of your classmates will be crushing in production, some will open up an office right away, some rise to fame through influencer gigs, and some will join their parent's office. And then the rest of us grow quiet. We post what we eat, activities we do, but don't share the ugly moments. We know things are tough for the majority of us, but seldom talk it out in a healthy dialogue often enough. Why is that? I wanted to break the ice as someone who's been working as an associate dentist for a few years following 1 year of general dentistry residency (AEGD). Please don't get me wrong, I love what I do and feel more confident and fulfilled in my career as days go by... but the beginning was really hard for me, and I'm sure there's more of you out there. The first video of this series will talk about mindset. Because with the right mindset, I believe the rest will come with time and experience. I cannot emphasize enough that we will all have humbling moments where we let our patients & dental teams down and those are natural part of our growth. Any mistakes in your clinical treatment will push you to do better faster than your successes. Growth can't happen without these 'failures.' The latter two videos to come will discuss the job search, things to consider before applying for jobs, questions to ask during the job interview, negotiating pay/contract, and things to look out once you accept the job. Obviously these are my personal opinions and I respect those with different viewpoints. Just wanted to speak up on the things that people seldom talk about as dental professionals and recent graduates of dental school. Hope this helps anyone who is starting to feel a bit anxious entering into the real life dentistry. I am rooting for you!!
