Meta ELIMINATES Privacy Opt-Out on Facebook and Instagram

Meta announced it is eliminating its "Off-Facebook Activity" disconnect setting, effective July 2026, removing the last remaining mechanism that allowed Facebook and Instagram users to fully sever their off-platform browsing and purchase data from their social media profiles. The new single toggle only controls whether Meta uses that data for personalized ads and feed content — it does not stop the thousands of businesses that use Meta pixels, customer lists, and conversion tracking from continuing to send browsing, purchase, and login data to Meta in the first place. Meta states it is not collecting new information but is expanding how it uses data that is already being shared. The change is widely interpreted as a direct response to Apple's App Tracking Transparency framework, which limited Meta's ability to track user behavior within iOS apps — pushing the company to place greater value on web-based pixel tracking, which VPNs do not protect against. The practical consequence for users is that there is now no mechanism to prevent Meta from building behavioral profiles based on activity across the broader web. For advertisers, the change may improve ad targeting precision, as the profiles of users who had previously opted out will now feed into Meta's AI-driven targeting systems.
