Initial scenes were already seen in the first official Switch trailer in October 2016, but the official reveal of Mario's next big 3D adventure didn't come until January 2017 during the big Nintendo Switch launch event. It was made clear that Super Mario Odyssey would return to the roots of 3D Mario games, focusing on sandbox-like levels that, in addition to simple missions for casual players, are intended to appeal to veterans with somewhat more challenging missions. Despite the lack of a hub world, the game is more closely aligned with the popular classics "Super Mario 64" and "Super Mario Sunshine." However, the developers not only draw on elements from these two milestones, but also from more recent video games such as "Super Mario 3D World" and "Super Mario Galaxy." In general, Odyssey attempted to create a kind of "Best of 3D Mario," while also bringing a breath of fresh air with many great ideas.
