Thirty children and teenagers were miraculously spared from the destruction of the deadly earthquake which occurred last week when their orphanage remained intact after the quake. What is more amazing is that almost all the buildings around and next to the Kataraj Orphanage were destroyed, but the orphanage remained intact. Recalling the terrifying moment when the earthquake struck the country on February 6, a resident of the welfare home, Hassan Al Hassan, age 15, said he and the other residents were sound asleep before being woken up by a strong tremor. Hassan, who is fluent in English, said the incident he witnessed left him with lingering trauma and fear. He also said that people at the orphanage were traumatised by the incident and that they would flee if there was another aftershock. The orphanage caretaker, Abu Khalid Ahmad, said that most of the residents who live there are Syrian orphans who fled to Turkey when war broke out in their country. They have been living in the house for three years. ---------------------------------- #NST #NSTTV visit us at www.nst.com.my our Facebook www.facebook.com/nstonline more news at www.twitter.com/NST_Online and also www.instagram.com/nstonline
