The mouth and body are linked. The state of your oral health can affect everything from heart health to brain health to sleep quality to weight loss. In fact, your teeth often hold the answers to sicknesses that you didn’t even realize were in play within your body. Many diabetes sufferers and people with cardiovascular health problems became aware of their health threats thanks to a visit to their holistic dentist. Here are just seven tips to help you have a healthier mouth and body, thanks to a holistic point of view. 1. Don’t brush too hard. People have a tendency to brush harder if they skip a tooth brushing or weren’t very thorough the last time they cleaned their teeth. But brushing your teeth isn’t about force, it’s about quality. 2. Make flossing part of your routine. Little kids can be encouraged to floss their teeth with those fun little flossing sticks. If you hate pulling out a length of dental floss for yourself, get your own flossing sticks and clean away at least once a day. Flossing sticks are easy enough to take on the go too so you can tend to whatever is stuck between your teeth immediately instead of waiting until you get home and get your hands on some dental floss. 3. Clean your tongue. Your tongue is a huge part of your mouth, and its condition will affect your oral health, breath, and the taste of your food. You can use your tooth brush to clean your tongue – some even come equipped with tongue cleaners on the opposite side of the bristles – or invest in a tongue scraper and get all the gunk off once a day. 4. Alter your diet. Poor nutrition not only affects your immune system and makes you more susceptible to developing diseases and illnesses, eating poorly affects the health of your mouth. Plus, relying on the foods that are high in sugar or just easy to snack on means your teeth are being exposed to high levels of bacteria and acid, sometimes living in baths of acidity thanks to sticky or chewy foods that get stuck between your teeth. 5. Change your toothbrush. Your toothbrush is not self-cleaning! You should be exchanging your toothbrush for a new one not twice a year (when your dentist gives you a new one) but at least every six weeks or so. 6. Undergo biocompatibility testing. Every person has a unique genetic makeup, and biocompatibility testing is able to give your holistic dentist a wealth of information about your oral conditions and overall well-being so that the cosmetic dentistry, restorative dentistry, and preventive dentistry treatments you undergo are best suited to your individual needs and health. 7. Visit a holistic dentist. Your holistic dentist is treating your teeth, mouth, and body. Holistic dentistry looks at the whole picture of what’s going on with your well-being, rather than simply fixing a problem without identifying its source.
