If you turn on the news, or scroll through social media today, it feels like everyone is worried about “the end of the world.” Sometimes it’s said in jest. Other times it’s serious. We’ve all heard of doomsday preppers, or of cults who believe in an impending end of the world. And we’ve seen the movies, featuring the end of the world on the big screen. The idea of an apocalypse is deeply embedded within our culture and history. And recently, due to worldwide pandemics, civil unrest, economic catastrophes, environmental crises, people around the country are preparing for the worst. And this isn’t the first time people in the U.S. have prepared for the end. That’s because apocalyptic thinking is nothing new. In fact, it’s very very old. A lot of the apocalyptic thinking in our country can be traced back to the history of Christianity, where endtime prognostication plays a major role in Christian theology. And there is not just one apocalypse - there have been many. So what are the roots of our apocalyptic thinking? And how prepping for the end-times entered into our social, cultural, and political discourse?
