President Xi: China, U.S. Should Deepen Mutual Trust, Cooperation

Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized on Monday that China and the United States should deepen strategic mutual trust and mutually-beneficial cooperation. Addressing the joint opening ceremony of the eighth China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue and the seventh China-U.S. High-Level Consultation on People-to-People Exchange (CPE), Xi said all countries share intertwined interests against the backdrop of world multi-polarization, economic globalization and social informatization. Thus, China and the United States should strengthen their mutual trust by regular communication in order to avoid strategic misjudgment, he said. The Chinese president also called on the two sides to expand mutually-beneficial cooperation, uphold the win-win principle, and raise the level of bilateral cooperation. He said both countries should strengthen coordination on their macroeconomic policies, jointly strive for achieving positive outcomes at the G20 Hangzhou summit with all parties concerned, and reach a reciprocal bilateral investment treaty at an early date. China and the United States should also deepen cooperation in the areas of climate change, development, Internet, nonproliferation, military and law enforcement, and enhance communication and coordination on major global and regional issues, Xi added. The dialogue will cover topics of building a new type of relationship for major countries, managing differences and sensitive issues, and the two countries' interaction in the Asia-Pacific, while the CPE will aim to promote institutionalized cooperation between colleges, universities and think tanks, explore new cooperative models between medical organizations and launch public medical and healthcare cooperation regarding a third country. The dialogue will be co-chaired by Chinese Vice Premier Wang Yang and State Councilor Yang Jiechi, with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew on Monday and Tuesday, while Chinese Vice Premier Liu Yandong will co-chair the CPE with Kerry.
