Midnight Office "Get Ready" Choreography by Mike Song

What up everybody! Mike Song here… Just wanted to share a bit about this piece : A couple months ago, I was in a bit of a conflicted headspace when it came to choreographing for myself - I wasn’t having fun anymore and it felt like I had hit a longstanding choreo block. So I decided to revisit the way that I approach teaching my classes. If you’ve taken class from me before, you know that I usually start by warming up with some basic technique drills before moving on to teach the combo. However, I started to question how much my students were actually getting out of learning the specific choreography combos that I was giving them. In doing so, I also revisited my own philosophies on dance and what kind of dancers/movers/artists I wanted to help cultivate through my class experience. Even after a decade into this international teaching game, it's become clear to me that I need to be way better at helping my students explore their individuality in my class environment. So I made this combo thinking “I’m going to throw a lot of basic fundamentals in here, make sure the flow feels as natural as possible, have loose guidelines, and hopefully the student can use this combo to just practice how they wanna freak different moments or steps the way they want to”. Nothing crazy or super abstract. On top of all that, I didn’t expect to shoot this video anywhere outside of class, but in the spirit of documenting life and moments with homies - I decided it would be worth it to throw on some Knight Caps and dance with a couple of crewmates whom I consider to be super high level groovers! Consider this a first baby step into whatever chapter this ends up becoming in my journey. Thank you to the few of you who actually end up reading this entire thing. You are appreciated. PEACE!
