The Rev. Becky Rowell's Sermon on December 21, 2025

On the Fourth Sunday of Advent, the Rev. Becky Rowell reflects on the winter solstice—the longest night of the year—and the quiet, faithful courage of Joseph, whose own dark night of the soul becomes part of God’s unfolding plan of salvation. As the days reach their shortest and the darkness lingers longest, this sermon invites us into the Gospel story of Joseph: a righteous, ordinary man faced with devastating news and an impossible decision. Betrothed to Mary and bound by law, custom, and community expectations, Joseph wrestles with betrayal, fear, and heartbreak. Choosing mercy over strict righteousness, he prepares to quietly end the betrothal—until God intervenes through a dream. Through the angel’s message, Joseph is invited into a radically altered future. Without overthinking or demanding proof, he trusts. He takes Mary as his wife, claims her child as his own, and risks social disgrace—all because he believes that God is with him. In doing so, Joseph becomes an unlikely participant in a plan that will change the world. The Rev. Rowell weaves together Scripture, history, and personal reflection to explore how God often disrupts our carefully laid plans—sometimes subtly, sometimes completely. Whether through a persistent thought, a stalled project, or an unexpected turn in life, God continues to lead, inviting us to stop pushing, start praying, and trust where God is guiding us next. As we stand on the edge of Christmas, this sermon offers reassurance for anyone navigating uncertainty, transition, or the longest nights of the soul: God is with us, even in the darkness, and the light is already beginning to return. #FourthSundayOfAdvent #Advent #WinterSolstice #LongestNight #Joseph #TrustGod #FaithInDarkness #GodWithUs #Emmanuel #AdventHope #ChristChurchFrederica #EpiscopalChurch If this sermon encouraged you, please like and share this video to help spread hope during this Advent season.
