Residents begin clear up in the aftermath of heavy fighting in eastern town

(5 Jul 2014) Residents of the eastern Ukrainian town of Mykolaivka, on the outskirts of Slovyansk, were on Saturday trying to cope with the aftermath of heavy fighting, almost 24 hours after rebel forces fled. Bodies of civilians were still lying on the streets, and residents were trying to clear away the rubble of heavily damaged buildings. According to the Defence Ministry, 50 insurgents were arrested and 70 died during the fighting in Mykolaivka, in the Donetsk region, on Friday. No exact numbers were given for civilian casualties. Ukraine's army is currently conducting an intelligence operation to detect any remaining rebels, who, according to officials, were wearing civilian clothes to blend in with local residents.
