Volvo XC60 6 speed automatic gearbox oil top up

Today’s job on the Volvo is a common one amongst the 6 speed automatic gearbox models – a slipping transmission. The Borg & Warner 6 speed automatic gearbox, which is common amongst Volvo, Ford & Mazda, is known for being a little problematic. I count myself lucky because the car is 11 years old and done 145,000 miles and hasn’t skipped a beat... until now. When I start the car, especially from cold, and put my foot down, there is no drive for a good 4-5 seconds before it picks up and drives away. It also maintains lower gears for longer and revs harder while getting up to speed. It appears to improve in performance when the gearbox is warm, but only marginally. After much research and noting that the car’s service history mentions nothing of a gearbox oil change, I decided that it is the automatic transmission fluid that is at fault. I have booked the car into a friend’s garage to have the gearbox reverse flushed so that it refreshes the oil supply and takes any detritus in the gearbox with it back the way it came, but until then and to keep the car on the road, I have decided to top the old fluid up with 1 litre of fresh ATF to improve the performance slightly and see me through the week. Therefore, in this video, I show you how I went about filling the gearbox with ATF.
