The F-105 Thunderchief in the Vietnam War: Cold War Air Combat and Aviation History Step back into November 1966 and experience the gripping reality of the air war over Southeast Asia. Operating out of Korat Air Base in Thailand, the dedicated airmen of the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing embarked on some of the most perilous missions in aviation history. About the F-105 Operations in Vietnam The F-105 Thunderchief was an incredibly complex weapon system, packed with advanced radar and electronics. Keeping these massive fighter-bombers combat-ready was a Herculean task. Ground crews worked tirelessly through the night, utilizing roughly 300 pieces of specialized support equipment valued at six million dollars. For every single hour an F-105 spent in the air, it required an astounding 40 man-hours of maintenance on the ground. The ultimate goal for these pilots was to survive 100 missions over North Vietnam. Reaching that milestone meant they could finally rotate home to their families. However, achieving that number meant flying into the most heavily defended airspace in the history of air warfare. The flatlands around Hanoi were heavily fortified with intense anti-aircraft artillery and deadly SA-2 surface-to-air missile sites. Surviving a bailout in this hostile territory relied on the equipment packed into the pilots' vests: flares, weapons, compasses, mirrors, and most crucially, the emergency beeper radio to call in rescue choppers. From the superstitions surrounding a base dog named Roscoe to the harrowing accounts of dodging SAMs in the Red River Valley, this documentary explores the raw human element behind the incredible machines.
