Selective Image Denoising Using Reinforcement Learning | PhD Research Explained In this video, I break down my research work on selective denoising for document images (Bangla Newspaper Jugantar ) using reinforcement learning (RL)—an innovative approach to cleaning document images without damaging their content. Traditional denoising techniques often over-smooth or erase fine structural details like handwritten strokes, printed text, or layout elements. That’s where selective denoising steps in. 🔍 What’s the Problem? Document images are often noisy—especially scanned forms, degraded pages, or handwritten manuscripts. But unlike natural images, not all parts of a document should be equally denoised. Applying global filters may lead to loss of critical textual or structural information. 🧠 The RL-Based Solution This research proposes a reinforcement learning agent that selectively decides which regions of a document image need denoising and which should be preserved. The model learns a policy that balances cleaning with preservation by receiving feedback based on OCR confidence and visual metrics.
