Poland centre helps child refugees cope with move

(16 Mar 2022) With more than 1.8 million people now having fled Ukraine to neighbouring Poland, a large six-story building in Warsaw has been turned into a centre to help those who require special medical attention or psychological care, among them traumatized children.    Currently, according to officials, there are 400 people at the centre, half of them children, who have fled the fighting caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.    Polish volunteers help with everything, but the center is largely managed by a team recruited from the refugees themselves. Some of the refugees are doctors, social workers and psychologists and they are working to help others who, like themselves, have recently fled the conflict raging at home. The people at the center also work to prepare children to enter the Polish education system. The children face not only the trauma of having fled war, but also the prospect of learning at Polish schools not yet speaking the language. More than 3 million people have fled Ukraine since the war began on February 24 and of those over 1.8 million have arrived in Poland. Across Poland, authorities, NGOs and volunteers have mobilized to help them. =========================================================== Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: [email protected] (ii) they should check with the applicable collecting society in their Territory regarding the clearance of any sound recording or performance included within the AP Television News service (iii) they have editorial responsibility for the use of all and any content included within the AP Television News service and for libel, privacy, compliance and third party rights applicable to their Territory.
