Diabetes can be a life-altering condition and if left untreated, it can lead to serious complications including damage to the eyes. This is called diabetic retinopathy and it’s important to understand the symptoms. At the end of this video, you’ll know what to look out for and what you should do if you experience any signs of diabetic retinopathy. Today, we’re going to cover the common symptoms of diabetic retinopathy, which include: • Blurred vision or floaters in your eye; • Dark or empty areas in your vision; • Poor night vision; • Sensitivity to light; • Distorted vision or “jagged” lines; • Difficulty recognizing faces; • A decrease in color vision; and • Fainting or blacking out. If you have any of these symptoms, you should make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible. The sooner you can get treatment, the better. Your doctor will do a comprehensive eye exam to check for damage to the retina, which is the light-sensitive layer of tissue at the back of the eye. They may also use a special laser test to help identify any damage to the retinal blood vessels, which can be a sign of diabetic retinopathy. If diabetic retinopathy is detected early, treatment can help to slow or even prevent vision loss. Treatment options include laser therapy, eye injections, and vitrectomy, which is a surgical procedure to remove blood from the eye. So, if you have any of the symptoms we discussed today, it’s important to seek medical attention right away. Early diagnosis and treatment can help protect your vision and help keep your eyes healthy. Thank you for watching! DR.
