In the southern Basra province, a suicide car bomb killed an Iraqi civilian and wounded three British soldiers, police said on Friday. The explosion happened near Shaibah, which is about eight kilometres (six miles) from Basra. The remains of the car bomb could be seen scattered all over the site of the attack. Other civilian vehicles were charred by the massive explosion. Another car bomb exploded in a packed vegetable market in northern Baghdad as shoppers were buying food for their evening meals. At least 15 people were killed and 22 wounded in the Thursday evening blast in Sab'' al-Bour. The injured, some of them children, were recovering on Friday at the Kazimiyah hospital. Also in Baghdad, hundreds gathered to mourn the loss of Mahmoud al-Hashimi, whose brother heads Iraq''s largest Sunni Arab political party. Al-Hashimi was slain along with a companion on Thursday as they drove through a mostly Shiite area, the Iraqi Islamic Party said. Tariq al-Hashimi is among the key players in negotiations over a new national unity government, which have stalled over the issue of who will be the next prime minister. The Shiites, the biggest bloc in the 275-member parliament, have nominated Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari for a second term. But Sunni and Kurdish parties, whom the Shiites need as coalition partners, have rejected al-Jaafari and called on the Shiites to name a new candidate.
