Ahead of the September 19th Edo state Governorship election,the Independent National Electoral Commission has commenced first level training of Electoral Officers and Assistant Electoral Officers (Operations) on Polling and Counting procedures. The three-day training taking place in Benin city, Edo state capital is organised by the Electoral Institute (TEI) with support from IFES in line with INEC's Supplementary Regulations and Guidelines to Elections and INEC Policy on Conducting Elections in the Context of the COVID 19 Pandemic. 36 participants are presently under taking the training in 2 different venues in compliance with the safety and health protocols as established by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control to ensure physical distancing. The objective of the training is to equip the participants with the ability to organize and conduct training on Polling and Counting procedures for future INEC elections effectively and efficiently. Declaring the training open, the Edo state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Alalibo Sinikiem Johnson highlighted the importance of the training in enhancing the capacity of the participants who are considered to be election managers at the Local Government Area offices of the Commission. On his part, the Director General of the Electoral Institute,Dr. Sa'ad Umar Idris stated that the training would equip the participants with the skills to manage ad-hoc Staff training on Polling and Counting procedures at the Local Government Area offices of the Commission. Also the Chairman, Board of the Electoral Institute, Prince Solomon Adedeji Soyebi in his goodwill message, urged the participants to comport themselves and demonstrate a high sense of responsibility, not only during the training, but throughout the conduct of the Elections. The second Level training, which will cover AEOs ADMIN & CLUSTER, will take place from 27th to 31st July.
