UN says Yemen experiencing world's worst humanitarian crisis

(19 Dec 2017) The United Nations (UN) warned on Tuesday that Yemen continues to face a humanitarian crisis with 18 million people in need of food. "Yemen is the largest food insecurity crisis in the world and our recent humanitarian needs overview identified almost eighteen million people who are in need of support, "Jamie McGoldrick, UN humanitarian chief in Yemen said. He urged parties to facilitate sustained and unimpeded humanitarian access to those in need. The nearly three-year-long war has killed more than 10,000 civilians and driven millions to the brink of famine in Yemen. The UN human rights office said on Tuesday it had verified the killings of 115 Yemeni civilians and other non-combatants in airstrikes carried out over 11 days this month by the Saudi coalition. Human rights officials have expressed concern about a surge in civilian casualties from airstrikes after the killing earlier this month of Yemen's former president, Ali Abdullah Saleh. Saleh was killed by the rebels, known as Houthis, after apparently switching alliances and turning against his former allies.
