Do's and Don'ts following an Ear Surgery | Things to care after Tympanoplasty | Dr. Vivek Sasindran

Dr. Vivek Sasindran, Consultant ENT, Head and Neck Surgeon In this discussion, we will go over the do's and don'ts to follow after undergoing a routine ear surgery, such as tympanoplasty. After the surgery, there is typically a suture incision behind or sometimes in front of the ear. It is crucial to keep the surgical site dry, so head baths should be avoided for a week. The sutures are usually removed on the 7th day, after which you can resume normal bathing. Immediately after surgery, it is important to place a cotton ball in the ear, which should be changed whenever it becomes soaked. This cotton ball should be kept in place until the ear or ear drum has healed. During the recovery period, it is advised to avoid lifting heavy weights, engaging in strenuous activities, and forcefully blowing your nose. When sneezing, it is recommended to sneeze with your mouth open to prevent pressure build-up in the middle ear. Air travel is restricted immediately following tympanoplasty, but day-to-day activities can be resumed. After four to six weeks, the ear will be cleaned, and the doctor will ensure that the graft has successfully taken hold. These instructions are important for a successful recovery from tympanoplasty.
