As an indie artist, who tours by himself, I spend a lot of time out on the road. I prefer to tour on my motorcycle when possible, but occasionally that isn't feasible - this time around my Condor A350 is in need of an engine overhaul before it's road-worthy again, so I'm out on the road on my car. While I'm video blogging on my travels from town to town, there's always someone watching over me, providing vehicle security, and as far as car mascots go, I think he's pretty cool. My absurd little traveling companion has been with me since I had my first car (an awesome little nissan sports coupe, t-tops and all!). His name is Copernicus, and he's a tiny stuffed manatee that hangs out in one of the heating vents of my car. He was a birthday present I received when I was a teenager - probably turning 16 at the time. For a long time, in the realm of totem animals, the manatee would have been mine. I developed a fondness for them when I was about 12 years old, on vacation with my family in Florida. I've always thought that baked potatoes should be able to swim, so manatees were a natural fit for me. I picked up a stuffed manatee at a gift shop, and things escalated from there. I started receiving manatee-related gifts - stuffed manatees, stained-glass manatees, manatee t-shirts, carved stone manatees, manatee calendars... you get the picture. After all, one of the descriptors you want attached to you as an indie artist is "manatee enthusiast." Right? I've never been one to use bad pickup lines, so I must admit that what I say in this video blog about using the line, "Hey baby, want to come check out my manatee paraphernalia?" never happened.
