Economic Implications of the COVID-19 Pandemic: A New Political Economy for Europe?

Panellists explore whether the global health crisis has necessitated a re-evaluation of the role of the state in relation to the market. The COVID-19 pandemic has had asymmetric effects and a variety of responses across Europe. Given the combined health and economic challenges, the EU may need to adopt more interventionist approaches but this could in turn lead to clashes within the EU especially around fiscal policy and taxation, labour markets and redistribution and industrial policy. As individual member states work to mitigate the economic implications of the pandemic, could these regional economic recovery policies signal a broader shift in attitudes beyond the immediate crisis? How has Europe’s political economy been affected by the current health crisis? To what extent will national interests continue to dominate member state’s economic priorities following the COVID-19 pandemic? And can the EU achieve a consensus and accommodate a move towards a more interventionist economic model? This event draws on the findings and conclusions of a recent Chatham House research paper entitled ‘Europe after Coronavirus: The EU and a New Political Economy’. https://www.chathamhouse.org/publicat... - Chatham House, the Royal Institute of International Affairs, is an independent policy institute based in London.
