Well, I was once in private practice for about nine years and enjoyed it very much in terms of the individual contact with patients. But I missed the collegiality with other pediatric neurologists and I missed being at the cutting edge of our field after learning about new things. That's why I wanted to come to an academic environment. Also because I really want to inspire students and residents to become pediatric neurologists. I've always been fascinated with the nervous system, especially the interaction between mind and body. Initially, I was planning to be an adult neurologist, but during my training I just simply fell in love with the children. It's tremendous to me how we can influence the well-being of a child that will have implications for the rest of their lives. My patient care philosophy boils down to two things: first is to listen, to really listen to what the child or the parents have to say because nobody knows the child better than the parents- or the child themselves; the second is to always be curious and to always ask “why” and try to find out the reason for things. The great things about pediatric neurology is that you get to work with children and children are just simply fun. They're fun to be around and it's a joy to see them grow up and to get better so much faster in most cases. In my time away from work I like to spend time with my husband, gardening, photography, hiking in the mountains, and especially playing with our two Australian Shepherds.
