Electric Chair Execution of Nazi Spy in the USA: Herbert Haupt

Herbert Hans Haupt’s story is one of identity, ideology, and betrayal during the turbulent years of World War II. Born in 1919 in Stettin, Germany (now Szczecin, Poland), he emigrated to the United States as a child when his family settled in Chicago in the 1920s. Growing up in America, Haupt became a U.S. citizen, attended local schools, and appeared to live an ordinary life as an apprentice optician. Yet beneath this integration remained a strong attachment to German nationalism. As a teenager, he joined youth circles linked to the German-American Bund, where Nazi ideology and loyalty to the Third Reich were actively promoted. These influences would shape the path that led him into one of the most unusual espionage cases on American soil. By 1941, global events reshaped Haupt’s future. After traveling abroad, he found himself in Europe as Nazi Germany escalated the war. Recognized by the Abwehr for his fluent English and American background, Haupt was recruited for Operation Pastorius, a covert sabotage mission targeting U.S. infrastructure. Alongside seven other agents, he received intensive training in explosives, covert operations, and document forgery before being transported by German submarines to American shores in June 1942. Landing in Florida, Haupt traveled to Chicago, intending to begin sabotage operations while maintaining contact with fellow agents. However, the mission unraveled when team member George Dasch defected and revealed the entire plot to the FBI. Haupt was arrested later that month and tried before a military tribunal authorized by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Despite never carrying out an attack, he was convicted of espionage and conspiracy. On August 8, 1942, at just twenty-two years old, Herbert Hans Haupt was executed by electric chair—the youngest of the saboteurs and the only American citizen executed for collaboration with Nazi Germany during the war. His story remains a striking example of how ideology, misplaced loyalty, and wartime desperation could lead an ordinary young man into historical infamy.
