Some of the biggest voices in tech, including Elon Musk and Sam Altman, have suggested that AI could eventually create a world of extreme abundance, where machines do most useful work, goods become incredibly cheap, and money becomes far less important — or even obsolete. But is that really possible? In this video, I examine the idea of AI-driven abundance from a scientific and economic point of view. Money is not just paper, coins, or numbers in a bank account. It is a rationing system. It decides who gets access to scarce things: food, housing, healthcare, energy, land, time, labor, and power. So for money to become irrelevant, scarcity itself would have to shrink dramatically. AI can already reduce some forms of scarcity, especially in the world of information. It can summarize knowledge, translate languages, write code, tutor students, assist researchers, and help people understand complex topics. In education, medicine, software, and scientific research, AI may make expert knowledge far more widely available than ever before. But the physical world is different. A video, song, or piece of software can be copied almost endlessly. A house, a hospital, a loaf of bread, or a car cannot. Physical abundance still requires energy, land, materials, factories, transportation, and labor. This is where thermodynamics, robotics, and infrastructure become crucial. AI may provide the intelligence, but robots must provide the labor, and cheap clean energy must power the whole system. If AI, robotics, and energy systems advance far enough, basic goods and services could become dramatically cheaper. Food, education, healthcare, housing, and transportation might someday become guaranteed or nearly free. That would be a revolutionary improvement for humanity. But there is a darker possibility. Abundance does not automatically mean equality. If a small number of corporations or governments own the AI models, chips, data centers, robots, energy infrastructure, and capital, then ordinary people may still face scarcity — not because goods cannot be produced, but because access is controlled. In the old economy, most people earned money by selling their labor. But if machines can do most labor better and cheaper, that old bargain breaks. Society may need new systems, such as universal basic income, universal basic services, public ownership, citizen dividends, or new forms of shared economic participation. #aifuture #money So will AI make money obsolete? Maybe in some areas. But not everywhere. Scarce land, status, trust, attention, meaning, and power will likely remain. The real question is not whether AI creates abundance. It probably will. The real question is: abundance for whom?
