The High Court has cracked down on the Bhajan Lal government, ordering Panchayat and local body elections to be held, rejecting all excuses. The Rajasthan High Court has dealt a major blow to the Bhajan Lal government. The government has rejected the Bhajan Lal government's request to postpone the Panchayat and local body elections. The court has now stated unequivocally that elections must be held by July 31, 2026. The government presented numerous arguments, ranging from OBC reservations to a shortage of staff and EVMs, but the High Court rejected any of the Bhajan government's excuses. So, should we assume the election bugle has been sounded in Rajasthan? And has the pressure on the government to hold elections increased? In a significant decision, a division bench of the Rajasthan High Court, headed by Acting Chief Justice SP Sharma, directed the state government and the State Election Commission to hold the Panchayat and local body elections by July 31, 2026. The government and the Election Commission had sought a deadline of December, but the court made it clear that the democratic process cannot be delayed for long. In fact, on November 14, 2025, the High Court, while hearing 439 petitions, ordered the government to hold elections by April 15, 2026. However, after the deadline passed, the government filed a new application seeking additional time. The government argued that the OBC Commission's report had not yet been received, and that a lack of schools, staff, EVMs, and other resources was hindering the elections. The government also told the court that the tenure of many Panchayat Samitis and Zila Parishads was about to expire between September and December. Therefore, holding elections later would strengthen the concept of "One State, One Election." However, the High Court did not consider these arguments worthy of relief. The State Election Commission also supported the government, stating that holding elections without finalizing OBC reservations would be difficult. However, the petitioners leveled serious allegations against the government. Former MLAs Sanyam Lodha and Girraj Singh Devanda alleged that the government had been deliberately delaying Panchayat and local body elections for the past one and a half years. Now, following this High Court decision, tremendous pressure has mounted on the Bhajan Lal government and the State Election Commission. The election schedule could be announced any time in the coming days. This means that political activity is set to intensify in Rajasthan, from villages to cities. Clearly, the High Court has sent a clear message to the government that elections cannot be postponed indefinitely in a democracy. All eyes are now on when the Election Commission will announce the dates.
