Making Maple Syrup with Jake the Dog | Off Grid Cabin | Cabin Life

Making Maple Syrup with Jake the Dog | Off Grid Cabin | Cabin Life Join Glenn, Maureen, and Jake the black Lab on this maple syrup making adventure. Spring is marked by Maple Syrup Season in the woodlands of North Central Ontario at the Off Grid Cabin near Algonquin Provincial Park. The wilderness forest is filled with the sounds of song birds, black capped chickadees and woodpeckers Maureen gathers sap from maple trees which are tapped on their 40 acre wilderness retreat, and hauls it by sled to the fire pit area, to boiled down to maple syrup. Glenn plays with Jake while he collects and prepares dry standing wood for the open fire used to boil down the maple sap to maple syrup. Then he tends to the sap, keeping the pot full, and the temperature in the range of 218 degrees Farenheit. As the day goes on, Glenn and Maureen relax by the fire, and talk about maple syrup, the days events, and their Live Streams on YouTube. They remark how they enjoy their time with the regular group of "Cabin Life" subscribers, good people, having a fun time together, relaxing and discussing a range of topics. Jake starts his playtime - stealing Glenn's glove, then races around taunting Glenn - while the birds seem to laugh at them as Glenn attempts to negotiate to swap a stick for his glove. Glenn's tossing a stick for Jake ends with the camera getting hit square on - without damage to the camera - so the fun continues. While playing with Jake, Glenn tries to get him to take wood back to the fire, as a way of enlisting Jake as a fire helper. As the night goes on, the Barred Owl hoots. Glenn talks about the micro climate, and explains how the sap season has been sporadic as the seasonal temperatures fluctuate between higher and lower temps. He expresses his appreciation for being in an area where the spring melt has been slow, preventing the floods that people in other geographic areas have experienced. The following day they continue to boil sap, until the sap is ready for the final boiling down and bottling of the maple syrup. Glenn and Maureen talk about the process - Glenn explaining the steps they took to collect sap. Drilling the trees, and tapping spiles into the trees, being careful not to harm the tree, then connecting tubes from the spile to the buckets which are storing the sap as it drips out of the tree. Maureen talks about the bottling of the finished product into sterilised jars. The boiling sap is shows signs of being close to finishing when the tiny bubbles form all across the surface as it remains at 7 degrees farenheit above boiling temperature. The maple syrup is filtered one more time before it's poured into the sterilised jars. Making maple syrup with Jake the dog was a LOT of fun, and Jake couldn't agree more.
