High Risk for Rip Currents Continues, Hot for the Weekend: Thursday Evening Forecast 6/20/2024

We’ll keep a small chance for a few showers and storms this evening, but most places will stay dry. Scattered clouds will slowly clear into this evening, and low’s will sit in the low- to mid-70’s. The high risk for rip current continues into Friday night, so be sure to stay out of the Gulf waters. With an upper level ridge building over the area, it will be hotter and drier for your Friday. Highs will jump into the mid-90’s, and it will get even hotter by the weekend. Only a couple of brief showers are possible Friday, and rain chances will stay isolated for the weekend as well. More cloud cover will start to build into the area on Sunday before rain chances climb for the start of next week. With more of an unsettled pattern for next week, temperatures will be closer to average by the middle of the week. Alberto made landfall as a tropical storm in Mexico early Thursday morning. It has now weakened to remnants as it moves inland. It has been bringing rough surf, heavy rain, and tropical storm force winds to southern Texas and Mexico. Anytime there is anything in the Gulf, the surf will be rough in our area. The News 5 area will not see direct impacts, but dangerous surf will continue through Friday for our stretch of the Gulf Coast. The NHC is also tracking two other areas. One is in the Atlantic and is heading west. It has a medium chance for tropical development. The other is expected to move into the southern Gulf of Mexico in the next couple days and also has a medium chance for development over the next seven days. There are no immediate threats to our stretch of the Gulf Coast! The WKRG News 5 First Alert Storm Team covers part of southeast Mississippi, southwestern Alabama, and northwest Florida.
