I modified a Mongoose kick scooter adding an electric 12"hubless 1200w motor from a 1st Gen AirWheel I no longer ride. All I added was a throttle, and seat. I relocated the AirWheel's footrests to the front of the scooter, and upgraded the speed controller to a more powerful one capable of handling the AirWheel's 72v battery pack. Even tho it's a small battery unit, the higher 72v voltage gives much higher speed than the usual 48v batteries, that are the norm, even when the 48v provides double the amp hours. The regenerative coasting keeps the battery topped up nicely too. Although the speed controller is rated at 800w, I believe a higher wattage would provide higher speed. But the Mongoose ain't quite ready for that speed, due to no suspension or disk brakes, tho the Regen braking is still a little too strong, and being rear drive, looses grip easily braking at high speed. Between the 2 braking modes, the 1st mode doesn't stop fast enough at speed, and the 2nd mode is to strong. I've tried coupling the 2nd mode to a lower voltage, which helps somewhat. The ideal situation would be to use a throttle as the brake controller, so it's not just on/off. Or use planetary gears that make deceleration a brake. But planetary gears are so noisy. And besides, the bike is way too small for me, even kinda small for my neighbor, Alex.. tho he loves the thing, borrows it every day..
