PV Sindhu Loses To Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi 21-13, 19-21, 16-21 In The Semi-Final
India’s PV Sindhu crashed out of the Asian Badminton Championship following her 21-15, 19-21, 16-21 defeat at the hands of Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi on Saturday, April 30. Yamaguchi thereby managed to qualify for the final of the tournament in Manila. The 26-year-old Sindhu didn’t have a lot of trouble in the opening set after storming into the lead right from the word go. In a mere 16 minutes, the Indian shuttler closed out the opening game. After falling 2-8 behind, Yamaguchi failed to get a foothold back in the contest. At the halfway-mark, Sindhu led 11-5, and although Yamaguchi got a few points under her belt, Sindhu turned out to be too hot to handle for the Japanese shuttler. The 24-year-old Yamaguchi came out all guns blazing in the second game, taking an all-important 4-1 lead. But just when the Hyderabad-born Sindhu seemed like falling behind the 8-ball, she stormed back to take a 6-4 lead. At break time, she carried on her dominating run and amassed an 11-6 lead, thereby putting immense pressure on Yamaguchi to save the game. Thereafter, multiple unforced errors from Sindhu helped Yamaguchi close the gap at 10-12. The crowd cheered vociferously for the Japanese shuttler, who was somehow clinging on to hopes of winning the second game.
