According to Roger Bullivant, in his 1971 book, Fugue, the countersubject in J.S. Bach's Fugue No. 16 in G-minor (BWV 885) from Book 2 of The Well-Tempered Clavier, is "one of the most conspicuous countersubjects written." It's really quite obtrusive! I wanted to showcase this countersubject for you and so, first, you hear the actual subject, followed by the conspicuous countersubject. For the sake of comparison, I looked for an inconspicuous countersubject and settled upon that from Bach's Fugue No. 17 in A-flat major (BWV 886), also from Book 2 of The Well-Tempered Clavier. Both works are from 1744. Again, you hear first the subject, followed by the inconspicuous countersubject. On-screen, I've indicated some of my own observations about each of these countersubjects. Regarding the conspicuous G-minor countersubject, I found it to consist of nearly twice as many notes as the subject (!!), spanning a wider range, consisting of shorter note values and teeming with rhythmic excitement (thanks to the ties and 16th rests). Regarding the inconspicuous A-flat major countersubject, I found it to consist of fewer notes than the subject, a narrower range, longer note values and a simpler rhythm. This countersubject moves mainly by half step, using quarter notes. Definitely, much less wicked than the G-minor countersubject. How I do love that one!😍 Roger Bullivant's book on Fugues: https://archive.org/details/fugue0000... Sheet music for Bach's Prelude & Fugue in G-minor, Book 2: https://vmirror.imslp.org/files/imgln...
