Add a Homelink or Car2U to your car or truck

The dilemma is that to easily park in your garage you need a garage door remote in your car but the visor clip on type are powered by batteries and always on when you leave your car parked in your driveway. That is very susceptible to a thief to break your window and then have access to your garage and likely the interior of your home from there. Well newer cars sometimes come with these HomeLink (or Car2u) systems built into them and they sometimes are powered down unless the key is in the ON or ACC position. What can you do if your car did not come with such a system or the option to add it from the factory is to expensive. Well this video shows how I solved that problem on my 2015 Ford F150. (This is just my solution, follow my tips if you want to do something similar). I also did a similar upgrade to my daughters 2015 Toyota Corolla by replacing her entire mirror with a mirror that had the electro-chromatic feature and the homelink built into that. But this video just shows me adding it to my Ford F150. I fixed the entire system for $22 worth parts off of Ebay and the local auto parts store. You could likely find the parts at a local auto salvage yard too. I first looked for a source of power that was only on when the key was in the ON position. I found that in the current mirror wiring harness as my truck has an electro chromatic mirror. so using a multi meter I found the + and - wires I wanted to use. Make sure your multi meter reads +12 and not -12 or you will wiring this backwards. Add the splice connectors to the + and then to the - leads on the mirror harness and then connect them to the appropriate + and - leads off the Homelink module. After that it is just clean-up work with tucking the wires back into the headliner, reconnecting the mirror harness, and placing the module into the headliner. A tip here is that the headliner has space for the module so you can shove it in there and then using the rubber button form as a guide cut the headliner about that size at the right location and then take the bezel for the Homelink and sandwiching the headliner in the middle squeeze the bezel to the module. The mounting is up to you as you can place it anywhere. I did add a note in the video that I used a blue/brwn + and a Green/brwn - wire and these powered down when the F150 is in Reverse. This is because they do not want the electro chromatic function to work in RVS so that means my homelink buttons also do not work in RVS. That is something I can live with as I approach my house in D and I can shut the garage door when leaving after I enter Drive after backing into the street.
