S. Korea, U.S., Japan to stage combined missile search, tracking exercise in Hawaii

한미일, 北미사일 추적•탐지훈련 8월 초 하와이서 실시 South Korea, the U.S., and Japan will conduct search and tracking exercises for North Korean ballistic missiles later this summer. The announcement follows last week's meeting in Singapore of the three countries' defense chiefs. Kim Dami reports. South Korea, the U.S. and Japan will carry out a combined missile search and tracking exercise in Hawaii in early August to step up security cooperation and boost their readiness against North Korean missile threats. The three countries, as well as Canada and Australia will participate in the biennial Pacific Dragon exercise, on the occasion of the Rim of the Pacific Exercise, the world's largest international maritime warfare exercise. This comes as defense chiefs of Seoul, Washington and Tokyo agreed during the annual Shangri-a Dialogue in Singapore last week, to boost cooperation to counter North Korean missile threats through regular security exercises. Scheduled to take place from August 1st to the 14th, the training will be staged in the form of a combined training on detecting, tracking and intercepting simulated missiles fired at a target. According to military sources, the exercise will take place publicly this year after being held in private since 2018. Quarterly combined missile warning drills are expected to take place twice or more later this year. The set plan also reflects much strengthened cooperation between the three nations, as previous drills were staged irregularly without details being announced. North Korea has long slammed the missile warning drills, calling them a grave military provocation.
