The game's story takes place when Super Mario and other main characters, such as his brother Luigi and Bowser, were still babies. A stork is supposed to deliver babies Mario and Luigi to their parents one night. Suddenly, Kamek, a sorcerer on a witch's broom, zips up and snatches Luigi. Mario falls into the abyss, landing on the back of a green Yoshi, who, along with his friends, decides to help the child. When Kamek returns to his master Bowser's castle, he notices that one of the babies is missing. He sends his minions to capture Mario as well. Using a map found next to Baby Mario, the Yoshis hold a relay race through five different areas of Yoshi Island and finally arrive at Bowser's domain to rescue Baby Luigi from Kamek's clutches.
