New Orleans' levee protection system should hold, but other areas are not as protected. Heath Jones of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says that the $14 billion federal levee system built for the east bank is 16 years in the making and should be able to withstand Hurricane Ida's surge on the east and west banks of New Orleans and the non-coastal areas of Jefferson Parish, along with St. Bernard.
