The new version is with no filters, noise reduction, or panning as it was originally presented in 1992. The legendary Gala Concert to mark the 50th Anniversary of Josef Hofmann's first performance in the USA is a landmark in 20th century music. For the present recital Hoffman employed the now archaic practice of extemporizing before selections to get the audience to settle down and prepare to listen. These improvisations are also included here for the first time on this channel. Our aim here is to offer a rare glimpse at the extraordinary pianism of Hofmann, a pianist who shunned recording, with the full dynamic range and tonal quality that was his alone. In spite of modern restoration efforts some artifacts of age and wear are present.
