Milina Shahin, of the Public Information Office at the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in Gaza, said that in the year since the Israeli cabinet had decided to ease the blockade on the Gaza Strip there had been no real improvement in the lives of Palestinians. According to Shahin, unemployment has risen to 45.6 percent, while the number of Palestinians earning just 1.6 US dollars a day had tripled in the past year. Sami Abu Zuhri, a Hamas spokesman in Gaza, said that there was still very little getting through the blockade. A year ago, Israel announced it was significantly easing its blockade of Hamas-ruled Gaza to allow in virtually all consumer goods.
