The Apostle of Love: Saint John the Evangelist

The Apostle of Love: Saint John the Evangelist

Every December 27th, the Church celebrates Saint John the Apostle and Evangelist, the youngest of the Twelve and known as “the disciple whom Jesus loved.” Son of Zebedee and brother of James the Greater, he was called by Christ to leave his nets and become a fisher of men. Saint John was present at the most intimate moments of the Lord’s life: the Transfiguration, the Last Supper, and, uniquely, he stood at the foot of the cross, where Jesus entrusted his own Mother to him: “Here is your mother.” An apostle of love and contemplation, Saint John is the author of the fourth Gospel, three apostolic letters, and the Book of Revelation. His Gospel does not begin with a birth, but with an eternal truth: “In the beginning was the Word.” According to tradition, he was persecuted and exiled to the island of Patmos, where he received the visions of the Apocalypse. Unlike the other apostles, he did not die a martyr, but rather gave his life after a long existence dedicated to proclaiming that God is love. Saint John teaches us that true faith is born of intimacy with Christ, of silent fidelity, and of love that endures even in darkness. Saint John, beloved disciple of the Lord, teach us to remain with Jesus, especially in moments of suffering. Help us learn to love as He loved, and to recognize that God is Love. Intercede for the Church, and for all who seek the truth. Saint John the Evangelist, pray for us. Amen. 🔔 Subscribe for more stories of saints, faith, and miracles!
