Lager head, relatively thin neck short tail, pupil vertical, forehead with small scales, nostril very large. midbody scale rows 29-30; ventral's 169-170; subcaudals 50-54; dorsum light brownish grey ,with 22-24 large ,ovate spots in a row along the vertebral region; a light pink or white V- shaped mark on head; venter cream, with brown spots. Terrestrial ,crepuscular and generally slow-moving, except when striking. Inhabits grasslands ,scrub forests and other more open forest types, in addition to agricultural fields. Diet comprises small mammals, chiefly rodents, that are captured in ambush ,although smaller fare ,including crabs, frogs, lizards and birds may also be taken. When threatened, the hiss of this species is loud and strident, and may be followed by strikes of considerable force. some populations are capable of squirting venom up to a distance of third of a metre. The venom causes intense burning pain, swelling and discoloration ,and if left untreated ,may lead to kidney failure and death in humans. Ovoviviparous, clutches of 5-50 are produced. Widespread in the plains and midhills of Sri Lanka, up to 1500m ,although relatively more common in the dry zone.
