St. Jerome and the Latin Vulgate – Why His Work Still Matters Today (30 September)
Today we celebrate Saint Jerome (340–420 AD), one of the greatest Doctors of the Catholic Church. Best known for translating the Bible into the Latin Vulgate, St. Jerome’s work remains the only official translation of the Catholic Church to this day. In this talk, we reflect on: St. Jerome’s early life in Dalmatia and conversion from paganism. His studies in Greek, Latin, and Hebrew, and his ascetic life in the desert. His work with Pope St. Damasus and the Council of Rome, which finalized the canon of Scripture. His monumental translation of the Bible directly from Hebrew and Greek into Latin. His writings on morality, virginity, the lives of the saints, and his fiery debates with other scholars, including St. Augustine. The importance of his legacy and why the Vulgate remains central in the Catholic Church today. 💡 St. Jerome reminds us that God uses our gifts, even our past mistakes, if we surrender everything to Him.
