Some migrants to the UK will have to wait years to be eligible for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) under new immigration rules announced today. Under the Labour proposals, legal migrants to the UK will be unable to claim benefits until they become citizens – which could take up to 30 years in some cases. However migrants with jobs in vital services, such as doctors and nurses, will be able to earn their settled status after five years.
