Kurt Warner Ranks Zach Wilson #2 QB in 2021 NFL Draft - PART TWO

This is PART TWO of my game tape breakdown of Zach Wilson, the number two ranked QB on my 2021 NFL Draft board. As we saw in part one, Zach Wilson has a rare level of quarterback athleticism and the ability to process what’s going on around him...so there’s certainly more to like than not. In this episode, we continue to look at some of the things he did really well…but we’ll round it out by going through some things I saw on tape that I want him to do better if he’s really going to excel at the next level. What you’ll notice quite a bit in these plays is that it seems like he decides ahead of time what throws he’s going to make based on the coverages he recognized pre snap. You can’t just lock on and lock in…you have to continue to process after the snap and say yes, I may WANT to throw or THINK I’m going to throw to this guy, but I still have to be able to read these things out and get the ball to the right receiver. Don’t predetermine where you’re going to go...you need to see the big picture and work through your progressions...understand what the possibilities are and then react accordingly. I should mention, I never got a chance to sit down with Zach or any of these quarterbacks and watch film with them and say “OK, why did you do this…why did you go right to that guy or why didn’t you get to the next guy?” Because there’s always going to be lots of factors there. I’m only breaking down what I would do and what I see on film and how I might process it…but there’s a lot of things that come into play that when you’re behind center for 3-4 seconds with the ball in your hands. Believe me, things can look differently to you than they do to all of us looking from high in the sky, where we’ve got a chance to rewind tape numerous times!
