Players control an unnamed deputy sheriff who becomes trapped in Hope County and must work with factions of a resistance to free the county from the despotic domination of the seeds and the Eden Gate. The game focuses on combat and exploration; players fight enemy soldiers and dangerous wildlife using a wide range of weapons. The game features many elements found in role-playing games, such as a branching story and side quests. The game also offers a map editor, a cooperative multiplayer mode and a competitive multiplayer mode. Announced in early 2017, the development o Far Cry 5 has been expanded. The team explored several concepts before settling in an American location. The game was heavily inspired by several socio-political events in modern history, such as the Cold War and the 9/11 attacks. The development team sought to capture the desperate social climate after the events and reorient it for the game. Developed and published exclusively by Ubisoft, its competitive multiplayer mode was also created inside the company's studios around the world for a more creative contribution to Far Cry 5.
