Empty streets in western Austria amid 2nd lockdown

(17 Nov 2020) Western regions of Austria have entered a second new coronavirus lockdown alongside the capital, Vienna. Streets and shopping arcades in Innsbruck and Kufstein, located in the mountainous region of Tirol, remained largely empty on Tuesday morning. A limited curfew is banning people from leaving their homes except to go to work, get essential supplies, exercise or help people who need assistance. All restaurants, shops, hair salons and other services will be closed. Only supermarkets, butchers,  pharmacies and bakeries remain open.   Chancellor Sebastian Kurz has said the measures are necessary because Austria has seen a weekly average of 550 new cases of the virus per 100,000 inhabitants, a level 11 times greater than what authorities regard as sustainable.
