Keeping warm when winter camping is easy when you have an unlimited budget to buy top end backpacking gear. However, that is not the case for most people who go winter wild camping. Here are some cheap winter camping tips to keep warm in the cold. Sleeping Mat - try to buy a sleeping mat that is insulated. You can upgrade your sleeping mat buy adding additional insulating layers underneath your sleeping pad. Tent - try to buy a tent with lots of solid fabric on the inner and a fly that comes down really close to the ground. Clothing - your head, hands and feet will get cold first. Hats, gloves, neck thingy's and socks will retain heat and keep you warm. Tight fitting, moisture wicking, breathable and warm base layers work wonders and are a great investment. Any high loft (down or synthetic) clothing is great for backpacking. Miscellaneous - candles, lanterns, hand warmers, etc, are all cheap ways to keep you that little bit warmer. This included: 1) Sleeping bag liners are a great way of improving the warmth of your sleeping bag. I use an OEX Furnace Liner ( https://tidd.ly/4hIXmde ) but Sea to Summit make one too. 2) Inserting your sleep system into a bivvy bag will reduce drafts but at the expense of breathability. 3) Putting a hot water bottle into your sleeping bag is a great way of increasing warmth.
