Global Sumud Flotilla: 50 Ships Challenge Israel’s Gaza Blockade In Historic Mission

A historic civilian fleet is setting sail for Gaza in what organisers call the largest maritime mission ever assembled to challenge Israel’s blockade. The Global Sumud Flotilla, made up of more than 50 ships, brings together delegations from 44 countries across six continents — doctors, activists, clergy, artists and humanitarians united by one mission: to break the silence on Gaza’s siege. The first wave of ships departed Spain on 31 August, linking up with a second convoy in Tunisia on 4 September, before embarking on a week-long 3,000-kilometre journey to Gaza. High-profile figures like Greta Thunberg, Irish actor Liam Cunningham, and Palestinian campaigner Saif Abukeshek sit on its steering committee, lending global visibility to the mission. But the risks are immense. Israel has a history of violently intercepting flotillas, including the 2010 Mavi Marmara raid that killed 10 activists. In 2025, Turkish, Palestinian and European ships carrying aid have already been struck or intercepted. Yet, participants insist their mission is not only about food and medicine — it is about dignity, justice, and ending what they call an ongoing genocide.
