First reported in Russia during the early 2000s, the substance quickly gained notoriety for causing severe physical damage and devastating health consequences among users. Krokodil is a street name for desomorphine, a powerful opioid that can be produced from codeine through crude chemical processes. In many cases, the drug was manufactured using toxic household chemicals such as gasoline, paint thinner, and iodine. Because the mixture was rarely purified, users were often injecting a highly contaminated solution that could destroy tissue and blood vessels. Medical reports described severe infections, gangrene, and skin damage that gave the drug its nickname, as the affected skin sometimes developed a scale-like appearance.
