Leveraging global partnerships to ensure women’s full and equal participation in the economy by 2030 Women’s economic empowerment is critical to achieving gender equality and sustainable development. Nevertheless, structural barriers that restrict and limit women’s economic opportunities and working rights are widespread. Gender discrimination means women often end up in insecure, low-wage jobs, receive unequal pay for work of equal value and constitute a small minority of those in senior positions. It curtails access to economic assets such as land and loans and limits participation in shaping economic and social policies. And, because women perform the bulk of household work, they often have little time left to pursue economic opportunities. By presenting key findings of global studies and reports and highlighting existing partnerships and collaborations, the session seeks to highlight the extent to which gender inequality affects women’s economic empowerment around the world and discusses key recommendations and strategies.
